Introducing the Winterberry Stars Barn Quilt

There’s a certain kind of magic that settles over the garden once the snow arrives...
a hush that softens everything,
a brightness that makes even the simplest shapes feel enchanted.
This week, with the first true breath of winter in the air, a new barn quilt came to life in the paint room… and I’m delighted to finally share it with you.

Meet Winterberry Stars

Inspired by winter berries, evergreen boughs, and the nostalgic glow of holiday quilting traditions, Winterberry Stars is a celebration of the season in four little bursts of color. Painted in deep cranberry red and woodland green from our Prairie Paints collection, each star radiates warmth against a snowy whitewash ground, like a string of festive lights on an old farmhouse fence.

The design is simple, joyful, and timeless… the kind of piece that feels right at home on a porch railing, hanging above a holiday mantel, or tucked into a cozy kitchen nook where cookies are cooling and music fills the room.

As with all our barn quilts, every piece is made with care, distressed by hand, framed in cedar, and sealed to last for many winters to come. Winterberry Stars is available as a fully painted barn quilt, a DIY kit, or a downloadable pattern for those who love to create their own seasonal magic.

The Heart Behind the Design

This pattern was born during a quiet morning here in the mountains, when the air was crisp and the garden was still holding onto its structure under a blanket of snow. The contrast of red berries against evergreen has always felt like winter’s own palette, nature’s way of reminding us that color and life still linger, even in the coldest months.

I wanted to design something simple enough to invite playfulness, but bold enough to stand as a beautiful focal point for holiday decorating. Four stars, arranged like a little celestial quilt block, felt just right.

Holiday Sale – A Gift for You

To celebrate the season and this new release,
we’re offering 25% off all orders in the shop with the code Holiday25.

It’s the perfect time to gather a few kits for winter crafting, gift a barn quilt to someone who loves handmade goods, or start a new holiday tradition in your home.

Bring a Little Winter Cheer Home

I hope Winterberry Stars brings warmth to your spaces and joy to your winter days. Whether you hang it outdoors to greet the snow or place it indoors where family gathers, may it be a reminder of the quiet beauty this season brings.

Thank you, as always, for creating with us…
and for letting these pieces become a small part of your traditions and celebrations.

Sourdough Snickerdoodles for the First Snow

Sourdough Snickerdoodles — A First Snow Tradition

Happy Friday, friends! As the snow fell soft and steady across the yard this morning, I knew exactly what I needed to bake. My jaw is still a little sore from yesterday's implant (thank you for all the love!), but there was no stopping this long-held tradition of ours: Snickerdoodles on the night of the first snow.

For as long as I can remember, back to when my children were toddling around the kitchen in footie pajamas, we have welcomed winter’s first whisper with a warm batch of snickerdoodles. For years I used an old German family recipe, but with my sourdough practice growing this past year, I’ve been adding discard to many of our favorite bakes. And oh my goodness… these cookies went over the top in the very best way. Soft, tender, lightly puffed, and kissed with cinnamon.

There’s something about watching the snow fall while the house fills with the scent of warm sugar and spice. Maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe it’s magic—but either way, it feels like home.

So here they are, our Sourdough Snickerdoodles, straight from our snow-day kitchen to yours.

Sourdough Snickerdoodle Recipe

Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 sticks softened butter

  • 1 ½ cups sugar

  • 1 egg

  • 3 teaspoons vanilla

  • ½ cup sourdough discard

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour

  • 2 teaspoons baking soda

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • ½ cup sugar

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • ¼ teaspoon ginger
(I love using half white sugar + half raw sugar for extra sparkle and crunch)

Instructions

  1. Mix butter, sugar, egg, vanilla, and sourdough discard together until smooth.

  2. Add in dry ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.

  3. Chill the dough for 1 hour.

  4. Preheat the oven to 375°F.

  5. Roll the chilled dough into ping-pong-sized balls.

  6. Roll each dough ball in the cinnamon-sugar-ginger mixture.

  7. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

  8. Bake for 12–14 minutes until edges are lightly golden.

  9. Let cool… if you can wait that long.

Enjoy warm with someone you love—or with a quiet moment to yourself as the snowflakes settle outside your window.

Yea for the first snow!
May it bring sweetness to your weekend.

Stitching Through the Quiet Season – Introducing the Winter Garden Embroidery

There is a special kind of quiet that only winter knows. The garden may be sleeping under frost and snow, but in my hands, the threads are still blooming. I am so happy to finally share our Winter's Garden Embroidery Pattern & Kit with you,  a stitched bouquet of winter greens and berries gathered into an 8" hoop.

Winter's Garden Embroidery Kit and Pattern

This piece began as a sketch for our Winter Stitch Collection, inspired by branches outside my window, the last dried seed heads in the garden, and the way winter light turns everything a soft, silvery blue. I wanted a design that felt like a wreath for the colder months—part wild bouquet, part story circle—something you could hang by your desk, in your kitchen, or by a favorite reading chair to remind you that life is still growing quietly beneath the snow.

The Winter's Garden is stitched in an 8" hoop and features delicate winter florals and berries, evergreen sprigs and soft, feathery foliage with layered leaves and tiny details that invite you to slow down and take your time

It’s detailed enough to feel special and “keeper-worthy,” but still approachable for a confident beginner or an experienced stitcher looking for a peaceful, meditative project. This is the kind of piece you can work on with a warm mug nearby, one little cluster of stitches at a time.

If you love having everything ready to go, the Winter's Garden Embroidery Kit is for you. Each kit is assembled in the studio and includes:

  • Pre-printed or transfer-ready Winter's Garden design

  • An 8" embroidery hoop

  • Quality embroidery floss in a winter palette

  • Embroidery needle

  • Fabric, cut and ready for stitching

  • Small scissors

  • Full-color pattern with stitch guide and diagrams

  • Step-by-step instructions to walk you through each element

If you prefer to use your own materials, the pattern-only option (PDF or printed pattern) includes the line drawing, color and stitch guide, and instructions, perfect for stitching from your own stash or customizing colors.

My hope is that Winter Garden becomes a quiet companion for you this season, something you can pull out on long evenings, snow days, or slow Sunday afternoons. Let the rhythm of the stitches help you breathe a little deeper, remember the beauty that’s still here, and dream of the gardens to come.

The Winter Garden Embroidery Pattern & Kit is now available in

the shop.

Whether you are stitching it for yourself or as a gift for someone who loves winter, I can’t wait to see this garden bloom in your hands. If you share your progress, be sure to tag us so we can cheer you on.

From my winter garden to yours—may these stitches bring warmth, beauty, and a little bit of wonder to your season. 🌲✨

Moonlit Forest Wreath Barn Quilt

There’s a special kind of stillness that settles into the world this time of year. The nights come early, the air feels crisp against the pines, and the quiet glow of winter invites us to slow our pace and notice the beauty in the small, simple things. This new season felt like the perfect moment to bring a new design to life, one inspired by the deep woods, soft shadows, and the shimmer of moonlight through evergreen branches.

I’m so excited to introduce the Moonlit Forest Wreath Barn Quilt.

Painted in rich tones of indigo, spruce, charcoal, and moss — all pulled from our Prairie Paints Collection — this wreath design is a circle of cool winter hues nestled into a cedar frame. There’s something magical about the way the shapes fold together, almost like star petals turning around an evergreen crown. It feels modern and fresh, yet rooted in the traditional geometry of folk-art quilt blocks.

Each piece is hand-painted, lightly distressed, and sealed right here in our studio for lasting beauty. I love how the deeper blues and greens settle into the wood grain, giving the entire piece a soft, woodland mood — the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to light a candle, put on a pot of soup, and settle in with something cozy to stitch.

This design was created as a companion to the quieter, more reflective days of winter. It hangs beautifully in an entryway, over a mantel, or in a kitchen nook. And if you’re looking for a meaningful and heartfelt gift, the Moonlit Forest Wreath brings that handmade, deeply personal touch that so many of us treasure during the holidays and beyond.

You can find the Moonlit Forest Wreath Barn Quilt as a finished piece in Our Shop With a DIY kit, or a downloadable pattern in our shop soon.  However you choose to bring it home, my hope is that it carries a bit of the peaceful winter woods to you — a reminder that even in the coldest seasons, beauty still gathers in gentle circles around us.

Thank you for supporting our little studio and for welcoming new designs with such warmth.
More winter creations (and a few surprises!) are on the way.

Celebrate, Dream, Create.

A Winter-Quiet Barn Quilt

There is a moment in late autumn that slips almost unnoticed into winter, a soft turning where the hills lose their color, the air grows quiet, and the world feels wrapped in a cool, smoky hush. It’s the moment that inspired our newest barn quilt design: the Smokey Ridge Star.

This piece has been living in my sketchbook for months, gathering shape from memories of early mornings on the ridge. When the sun is just beginning to lift, the hills settle into layers of charcoal, blue, and ash-white. The fields below are muted and still, and every sound is softened by the chill in the air. It’s a palette that feels peaceful, grounding, and deeply nostalgic, the kind of quiet beauty that feels like home.

That was the heart behind the Smokey Ridge Star.

Available Now

The Smokey Ridge Star is now available in the shop in multiple sizes, each hand-painted and ready to hang. As always, every board is crafted with care,  designed to feel like a piece of home.

You can find it in our shop

And for a few days more, don’t forget our Customer Appreciation Sale — 25% off all orders with code ThankYou25, plus a special gift on orders over $100.

Last Blooms Hand Embroidery Kit

There’s something tender about the last blooms of the garden — the petals softening, the colors fading to deeper shades, the way the stems bend with quiet grace. This is the season that inspired our newest embroidery kit, Last Blooms.

Each stitch in this design captures a moment of that gentle farewell.  The pinks of the coneflower and cosmos, the fading greens of the stems, and the golden centers that still seem to hold a little sunlight. It’s a reminder that beauty lingers, even in the letting go.

The Last Blooms Hand Embroidery Kit includes everything you need to create your own stitched garden: linen blend fabric, embroidery floss, needle, pattern, and instructions. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced stitcher, this project invites you to slow down, breathe, and bring to life what remains in the heart of autumn.

New to the shop is a fresh bundle of hand dyed tea-stained stitching cloth.  Each bundle has two 10" pieces of beautiful linen cotton muslin dyed with amazing variations.  I love stitching on these pieces of cloth, giving each floral embroidery a unique pallet.

As you thread your needle and begin each line, may you feel connected to the rhythm of the earth, the way each season carries its own quiet purpose, and how endings often bloom into beginnings.

Hens and Chicks – A Story of Home

There’s something timeless about a hen gathering her chicks — wings stretched wide, soft feathers rustling as they nestle close. It’s a picture of love and belonging, a quiet reminder that home is built from care, comfort, and the circles that hold us.

The Hens and Chicks Barn Quilt was inspired by this tender scene of farm life.
Each piece of the design tells a story:
🪶 The half-square triangles form the wings of the hens, open and strong.
🐥 The tiny checks are the chicks, lively and full of promise.
🏡 The rail blocks create their home — centered, safe, and rooted.

Painted in hues from our Prairie Paint Collection, each color was chosen for the story it tells:
🌾 Honeycomb – golden warmth of the nest
🌿 Asparagus Patch – the green of new life
🍁 Maple Sap – the grounding strength of the earth
🏡 Homestead – the steady heart of home
💧 Sodus Point – the calm blue of the morning sky

Together, they weave a quilt that feels both familiar and fresh — a folk-art piece that belongs in a farmhouse kitchen, a cottage nook, or hanging above the heart of a home.

The Hens and Chicks Barn Quilt is now available as a painted piece, a DIY kit, and a pattern — each one inviting you to bring its story into your own space.

May it remind you that no matter where life takes us, we all carry a home within — and wings that shelter love.

Annual Fall Barn Quilt Workshop

There’s something about fall that makes me want to gather people together. Maybe it’s the golden light on the mountains, the turning of leaves, or the way autumn seems to invite us indoors with stories and craft.

This past weekend we held our annual Fall Barn Quilt Workshop—a tradition I look forward to every year. After returning from New York, it was grounding and joyful to stand once again in my Utah backyard, surrounded by friends and students, brushes moving across wood, as colors and patterns began to bloom into quilt stars.

Each design painted was unique—heritage stars, bold geometrics, and patterns that feel stitched with family and memory. I love seeing how every person’s creativity comes alive, and how a simple piece of wood becomes a story in paint.

Workshops like this remind me why I love teaching—creativity is not just about the finished piece, but about the connection, laughter, and tradition we create along the way.

As we move deeper into the season, I’ll carry the joy of this gathering with me, along with the knowledge that these barn quilts will hang on walls and barns, carrying autumn’s warmth into the months ahead.

✨ Fall is Golden – 25% Off This Week Only

As I’ve walked the hills here in New York these past few weeks, every meadow seems brushed with gold. The goldenrod is at its peak, lighting up the fields with autumn’s glow, and reminding me how fleeting and beautiful this season truly is.

In that same spirit, I painted the Appalachian Leaves Barn Quilt — a design that celebrates the turning of the season, when every leaf tells a story of change, resilience, and beauty. This design has always felt like a hymn to the Appalachian hillsides where autumn comes in bold colors and soft light, a patchwork of leaves dancing across the mountains.

This week, as I balance repairs at my dad’s cottage and dream toward new beginnings, I’m leaning into that reminder: beauty is found in both the work and the dreams.

✨ To celebrate fall’s golden touch, I’m offering a Golden25 Sale25% off everything in the shop now through Sunday with code Golden25. From Prairie Paints to barn quilt kits and embroidery, this is the perfect week to gather your autumn projects.

Just as the fields of goldenrod won’t last forever, neither will this sale. Let’s welcome fall together with color, story, and a little golden glow.

Shop the Golden25 Sale →

🍂 Celebrate the season. Paint the beauty. Stitch the story. 🍂

P.S. This little Golden25 Sale means more than usual for me. I’ve been pouring time (and resources) into repairs at my dad’s cottage, and just this week I stumbled upon a house here in New York  -  a foreclosed place with so much potential, and a darling white barn that is perfect for all of our east coast classes.

It’s a big dream, but every order you place brings me one step closer. Thank you for being part of this journey and for supporting the work that keeps these stories, paints, and quilts alive. 💛

The Denim Bear Paw Barn Quilt

There are quilt blocks that tell stories of courage, of journeys, and of strength stitched into every line. The Bear Paw is one of those blocks. Generations before us pieced it together as a symbol of resilience and the pioneering spirit of home and hearth.

This week, I’m introducing a new interpretation of that classic: the Denim Bear Paw Barn Quilt. Painted in deep indigo blues, softened with vintage whites, and accented with colorful folk-art triangles, this design feels like a well-loved piece of denim—strong, beautiful, and timeless.

Each Denim Bear Paw is hand-painted with our Prairie Paint Collection, framed in warm cedar, and sealed with Prairie Paint Finishing Wax for lasting beauty whether displayed indoors or on a barn.

✨ Available as a painted barn quilt, DIY kit, or pattern, the Denim Bear Paw carries a story of strength into every home it touches.

From the fields and farms of the past to the cozy corners of our modern lives, the Bear Paw remains a reminder that we are stronger than we know.

With love & brushstrokes,

Irish Soda Bread - My Saturday Breakfast

There’s something about Saturdays that feels a little softer. The pace of the week finally slows, sunlight peeks through the kitchen window, and I can linger a little longer over a warm cup of tea. And if you peek into my kitchen on a Saturday morning, you’ll most likely find a loaf of Irish Soda Bread cooling on the counter.

This bread has been a favorite of mine for years—simple to make, but it tastes like something special. It’s tender, just sweet enough, with bursts of raisins in every bite. The smell that fills the house while it bakes is reason enough to keep this recipe on repeat, but the real magic is in that first slice, still warm, butter. 1 1/4 cups sugar

2 1/2 teaspoons

I love how easy it is to mix together—no yeast, no long waits. Just flour, sugar, butter, raisins, buttermilk, and a few pantry staples come together to make something that feels like a little celebration. It’s the kind of bread you can whip up on a whim when friends stop by, or when you simply want to treat yourself to a cozy morning.

For me, this loaf is more than a recipe. It’s part of the rhythm of my Saturdays. I imagine my Irish grandmothers watching over me as I mix it…remembering to splice a cross into the dough to “let the fairies out”. The sound of the oven timer, the golden crust cracking as I slice into it, and the way it pairs perfectly with slow mornings and second cups of tea.

If you’ve never tried Irish Soda Bread, this might be your sign. It’s hearty enough to stand alone, but also lovely with a drizzle of honey, a little jam, or even alongside eggs and bacon. And don’t be surprised if it becomes your weekend tradition too.

Because sometimes the best breakfasts are the simplest—made with love, shared with family, and savored one warm slice at a time.
