Meet Plum Pickin & Blue Belle: Two New Prairie Paint Colors

There is something especially lovely about adding new colors to the Prairie Paint collection. Each one begins with a feeling, a memory, or a glimpse of color found in the gardens, fields, and stories that inspire everything we create. Today, I’m so excited to introduce two beautiful new shades:

Plum Pickin
and Blue Belle.

Plum Pickin is a rich, deep periwinkle purple with the warmth and character of a perfectly ripened summer plum. Its name was inspired by memories of my grandmother’s orchard, where plum trees grew alongside the apples. She gathered those beautiful fruits and turned them into homemade jams, sauces, and even plum wine.

It is earthy, nostalgic, and just a little unexpected, the kind of color that feels both old-fashioned and wonderfully fresh. Plum Pickin adds beautiful depth to floral designs, barn quilts, painted furniture, signs, and all the little creative projects that need a touch of something special.

Prairie Paint Plum Pickin

Blue Belle is a beautiful, timeworn blue inspired by the delicate blue flowers that bring such sweetness to a garden. It has a peaceful, welcoming quality that feels right at home in cottage, farmhouse, and prairie-inspired projects.

This lovely shade is soft enough to feel gentle, yet rich enough to make a statement. Pair it with creamy whites and greens for a quiet garden palette, or combine it with deeper colors for a bold and colorful barn quilt design.

Prairie Paint Blue Belle

Beautiful Apart and Even Better Together

Although Plum Pickin and Blue Belle each have their own personality, they are especially beautiful when used together. The rich purple of Plum Pickin gives Blue Belle depth, while Blue Belle brings a soft, peaceful balance to the pairing.

Try them with warm golds, botanical greens, faded pinks, and vintage creams to create a palette that feels as though it was gathered straight from an old farmhouse garden.

Both colors are making their debut in our new Blue Belle Blossom Barn Quilt, where their rich, garden-inspired tones come together in a design filled with color, warmth, and prairie charm.

I cannot wait to see what you create with Plum Pickin and Blue Belle. Whether you use them in a barn quilt, a floral painting, a well-loved piece of furniture, or a project all your own, I hope they inspire you to celebrate, dream, and create.

Plum Pickin and Blue Belle Prairie Paints are available now in the shop.

The Log Cabin Star, Reimagined in Stitch

The Log Cabin Star, Reimagined in Stitch

There are some patterns that never leave us.

They follow us from wood to cloth…
from barns to homes…
from hand-painted boards to quiet moments with needle and thread.

The Log Cabin Star is one of those patterns.

Rooted in the long tradition of the Log Cabin quilt block, symbolizing warmth, shelter, and the heart of the home—this design has always carried a deeper meaning for me. Each “log” built around a center…each layer a story…each color a reflection of the life lived within those walls.

When I first painted the Log Cabin Star Barn Quilt, it felt bold and grounded. like something that belonged out in the open air. Framed in cedar, resting against wood and sky, it carried that familiar sense of strength and structure…with a bright, joyful twist in color.

But this time…

I wanted to bring that same design inward.

From Barn to Stitch

There is something sacred about translating a design from paint to thread.

Where the barn quilt is expansive and architectural…
the stitched version becomes intimate.

Slower.
Quieter.
Closer to the hands.

In this Log Cabin Star Cross-Stitch, each painted line becomes a series of tiny, intentional stitches...built one by one, just like the logs of a cabin.

The black background shifts the feeling entirely.

Instead of sitting in daylight, the star now glows—like a window lit at dusk…or a lantern left on to welcome someone home.

The colors feel brighter here.
More alive.
Almost like they’re floating.

A Pattern of Home and Light

The Log Cabin has always been a symbol of protection, a structure built to hold life, warmth, and memory.

But when you add the star…

It becomes something more.

A guide.
A center point.
A quiet reminder that no matter how many layers we build, there is always something steady at the core.

In both the barn quilt and the stitched piece, that meaning remains.

One hangs on the wall, bold and visible.
The other rests in your hands, forming slowly, stitch by stitch.

Both tell the same story.

Stitching the Story

This cross-stitch kit was designed to be more than just a project.

It’s an invitation to slow down…
to build something with intention…
to return, even for a moment, to the simple rhythm of making.

Each color placement echoes the painted version.
Each stitch becomes part of the structure.
Each finished piece carries that same feeling of home.

From My Hands to Yours

It’s always a special thing to see a design move between mediums...
to watch it shift and soften and take on a new life.

The Log Cabin Star began as a barn quilt…
but it feels just as at home in thread.

And maybe that’s the beauty of these old patterns....

They were never meant to stay in just one place.

✨ The Log Cabin Star Cross-Stitch Kit is now available in the shop.

The Orchard Tree

A story of roots, memory, and the hands that tend what grows

There are some designs that come from sketchbooks…
and others that come from memory.

The Orchard Tree Barn Quilt is one that has lived quietly inside me for years,
tucked somewhere between rows of apple trees,
in the hum of bees,
and in the steady hands of my grandfather, Alvaro Lyke.

He tended his orchard with a kind of patience that felt sacred.

Grafting branches, season after season,
different varieties of apples growing from the same tree.

I remember watching him,
not fully understanding what he was doing,
only knowing that it mattered.

That there was something almost miraculous
about one tree holding many stories.

A Quilt Made of Branches

When I began designing this piece,
it didn’t start as a tree.

It started as shapes,
half-square triangles, diamonds, repeating forms,
the language of quilts.

But as they came together,
branch by branch,
the pattern shifted.

A tree began to emerge.

Not a literal one,
but a quilted one...
built from pieces,
just like memory.

The reds became apples.
The greens, leaves in late summer.
The soft gold, that fleeting moment of harvest light
when everything feels full.

And at the base, a deep blue trunk,
steady, grounded, holding it all.

From the Studio

As I painted this Orchard Tree,
I found myself thinking about the small things we care for each day.

A garden bed.
A creative practice.
A family.
A dream that hasn’t fully taken shape yet.

And I wondered...

What is growing, even now, that I cannot yet see?

A Gentle Reflection

Take a moment, if you can,
to think about your own orchard.

Not just the one in the soil...
but the one in your life.

What are you tending?
What has been planted long ago
that is just now beginning to bloom?

You can find this design in the shop, ready to come to your home as your trees blossom this spring.

With Love from the Studio,

Holden Star

On Tuesday night in Salt Lake City, I stood in a room with thousands of people and felt something shift inside me.

We went to see Brandi Carlisle.
I thought we were going to a concert.

Instead, we walked into something that felt holy .

Her voice...clear, strong, impossibly tender, filled the arena in a way that made you forget there were walls. We laughed. We cried. We sang until our throats felt raw and grateful. There were moments when she stepped back from the microphone and the entire place carried the melody for her.

But it was when she began Hold Out Your Hand that something inside me cracked open.

The lights softened.
The rhythm began.
And thousands of strangers started to move together.

We danced.

We lifted our hands.

We sang about hope and forgiveness and loving one another anyway.

For three minutes and thirty seconds, the world felt like it could be mended.

The next morning, I came back to the studio and looked at the new Holden Star leaning against the wall.

Strong lines.
Bold corners.
Light and dark meeting in the center.

It felt different after that night.

The Holden Star isn’t delicate. It doesn’t whisper.
It stands steady.

It feels like the shape of courage.
Like the geometry of community.
Like what happens when we choose to hold out our hands instead of clenching them.

Stars have always symbolized guidance — something steady to look toward when the road feels uncertain. But this one feels more human to me. Less about finding your way alone… more about finding your way together.

Maybe that’s why it needed that song.

Maybe that’s why it was born this week.

Art does this sometimes

A song opens a door.
A painting walks through it.

The Holden Star is now available as a finished barn quilt, a DIY kit, and a pattern   but more than that, it feels like a small offering.

A reminder to:

Stand steady.
Sing loudly.
Dance when you can.
And when the world feels heavy…

Hold out your hand.

With Love from the Studio,

The Ponderosa Star

The Ponderosa Star

A Barn Quilt Rooted in Strength & Stillness

Some designs arrive quietly, carrying more meaning than they first reveal. The Ponderosa Star Barn Quilt is one of those pieces—steadfast, grounding, and deeply rooted.

Inspired by the towering ponderosa pine, this star reflects resilience shaped over time. Ponderosa pines grow slowly and deliberately, sinking deep roots before stretching skyward. They endure wind, weather, fire, and long seasons of waiting—standing as markers of patience, protection, and strength.

The Ponderosa Star carries that same spirit.

Its bold geometry and balanced form offer a sense of steadiness—something to return to when life feels unsettled. Painted in our Prairie Paint Collection, the colors are intentionally chosen to feel earthy, timeless, and anchored to the land. These hues work together the way nature does: quietly, confidently, without excess.

A Star for All Seasons

The Ponderosa Star belongs to every season. In spring, it speaks of new growth grounded in strong beginnings. In summer, it reflects endurance and presence. In autumn, it honors harvest and gratitude. In winter, it stands firm—holding space, even in stillness.

Whether painted as a finished barn quilt, stitched into fabric, or reflected on the page of a Creative Almanac, this star invites a simple question:

Where are you being asked to root more deeply before you rise?

Made with Intention

Each Ponderosa Star Barn Quilt is created with care, from the design itself to the paints, patterns, and process behind it. It’s available as a painted barn quilt, or a pattern, allowing you to bring this symbol of strength into your own hands and home.

Celebrate. Dream. Create.

Hens and Chicks – A Story of Home

There’s something timeless about a hen gathering her chicks — wings stretched wide, soft feathers rustling as they nestle close. It’s a picture of love and belonging, a quiet reminder that home is built from care, comfort, and the circles that hold us.

The Hens and Chicks Barn Quilt was inspired by this tender scene of farm life.
Each piece of the design tells a story:
🪶 The half-square triangles form the wings of the hens, open and strong.
🐥 The tiny checks are the chicks, lively and full of promise.
🏡 The rail blocks create their home — centered, safe, and rooted.

Painted in hues from our Prairie Paint Collection, each color was chosen for the story it tells:
🌾 Honeycomb – golden warmth of the nest
🌿 Asparagus Patch – the green of new life
🍁 Maple Sap – the grounding strength of the earth
🏡 Homestead – the steady heart of home
💧 Sodus Point – the calm blue of the morning sky

Together, they weave a quilt that feels both familiar and fresh — a folk-art piece that belongs in a farmhouse kitchen, a cottage nook, or hanging above the heart of a home.

The Hens and Chicks Barn Quilt is now available as a painted piece, a DIY kit, and a pattern — each one inviting you to bring its story into your own space.

May it remind you that no matter where life takes us, we all carry a home within — and wings that shelter love.

Annual Fall Barn Quilt Workshop

There’s something about fall that makes me want to gather people together. Maybe it’s the golden light on the mountains, the turning of leaves, or the way autumn seems to invite us indoors with stories and craft.

This past weekend we held our annual Fall Barn Quilt Workshop—a tradition I look forward to every year. After returning from New York, it was grounding and joyful to stand once again in my Utah backyard, surrounded by friends and students, brushes moving across wood, as colors and patterns began to bloom into quilt stars.

Each design painted was unique—heritage stars, bold geometrics, and patterns that feel stitched with family and memory. I love seeing how every person’s creativity comes alive, and how a simple piece of wood becomes a story in paint.

Workshops like this remind me why I love teaching—creativity is not just about the finished piece, but about the connection, laughter, and tradition we create along the way.

As we move deeper into the season, I’ll carry the joy of this gathering with me, along with the knowledge that these barn quilts will hang on walls and barns, carrying autumn’s warmth into the months ahead.

✨ Fall is Golden – 25% Off This Week Only

As I’ve walked the hills here in New York these past few weeks, every meadow seems brushed with gold. The goldenrod is at its peak, lighting up the fields with autumn’s glow, and reminding me how fleeting and beautiful this season truly is.

In that same spirit, I painted the Appalachian Leaves Barn Quilt — a design that celebrates the turning of the season, when every leaf tells a story of change, resilience, and beauty. This design has always felt like a hymn to the Appalachian hillsides where autumn comes in bold colors and soft light, a patchwork of leaves dancing across the mountains.

This week, as I balance repairs at my dad’s cottage and dream toward new beginnings, I’m leaning into that reminder: beauty is found in both the work and the dreams.

✨ To celebrate fall’s golden touch, I’m offering a Golden25 Sale25% off everything in the shop now through Sunday with code Golden25. From Prairie Paints to barn quilt kits and embroidery, this is the perfect week to gather your autumn projects.

Just as the fields of goldenrod won’t last forever, neither will this sale. Let’s welcome fall together with color, story, and a little golden glow.

Shop the Golden25 Sale →

🍂 Celebrate the season. Paint the beauty. Stitch the story. 🍂

P.S. This little Golden25 Sale means more than usual for me. I’ve been pouring time (and resources) into repairs at my dad’s cottage, and just this week I stumbled upon a house here in New York  -  a foreclosed place with so much potential, and a darling white barn that is perfect for all of our east coast classes.

It’s a big dream, but every order you place brings me one step closer. Thank you for being part of this journey and for supporting the work that keeps these stories, paints, and quilts alive. 💛

The Thistle Place Barn Quilt – A Family Story Painted in Purple

Some symbols are chosen. Others choose us.

In 1838, John J. Lyke bought a piece of land covered in tall purple thistles after his blind father-in-law declared, “Any land that can grow thistles this big is good land.” That land became the Lyke Homestead in Steuben County, NY—a place where generations lived, farmed, and passed down a legacy of strength.

The Thistle Place Barn Quilt was created to honor that story. It’s more than a design—it’s our family crest. Each room in the original farmhouse, and in my Utah home, has a carved or painted thistle—a quiet reminder that no matter where we are, we’re always connected by these root  The thistle stands for all of us: strong, beautiful, and enduring.

Painted in our vintage inspired Prairie Paints, in colors of purples, pinks and greens.  Available in four sizes, this barn quilt is also offered as a DIY kit and full-color pattern.

Let it bloom on your walls with a story worth remembering.
