Northern Lights: A Little Wonder, Painted in Color

There is something about a sky full of color that makes us pause. That feeling of wonder is at the heart of our Northern Lights Barn Quilt, a design that brings a little of that magic home through paint, pattern, and the joy of making.

With a palette that moves between earthy warmth and cooler shades, Northern Lights feels right at home in the changing seasons. It is a lovely way to bring color to a favorite space, whether you are drawn to the finished barn quilt or ready to paint a version of your own.

The Colors of Northern Lights

Our Northern Lights Barn Quilt is painted in Prairie Paints, with a palette of Castle Creek, Juniper Berry, Pigeon Cove, Maple Sap, Indian Paint Brush, Old Crow, White Linen, Pumpkin Patch, Old Wine Barrel, and Honeycomb.

Together, these colors give the design a balance of depth, warmth, and light. I love how the palette feels connected to the landscape...the garden, the changing leaves, and those quiet moments when the sky becomes the most beautiful part of the day.

A Barn Quilt to Make Your Own

One of my favorite things about barn quilts is the way the same pattern can tell a different story through color. Our painted Northern Lights offers one interpretation, while the Northern Lights pattern gives you a starting place for your own.

You might follow our Prairie Paint palette or choose colors that remind you of a place you love. Perhaps it is the garden outside your window, an autumn drive, or a collection of favorite shades you have been waiting to use.

There is pleasure in that process: choosing your colors, watching the pattern emerge, and stepping back to see what you have made. Each brushstroke becomes part of the finished piece, and each color choice makes it feel more like yours.

A Little Color for the Everyday

A barn quilt has a way of making a space feel personal. It draws the eye, starts a conversation, and carries the care that went into creating it.

Northern Lights is a celebration of that everyday beauty, the kind we can bring into our homes and the kind we can create with our own hands. Its name may call us to look up at the sky, but its colors invite us to notice the beauty all around us, too.

Explore the Northern Lights Barn Quilt and pattern at Tweetle Dee Design Co., and find the Prairie Paint colors to bring your own version to life.

Celebrate, Dream, Create.

A Beautiful Day at Our Fall Barn Quilt Workshop

There is something wonderful about a table full of paint, a little autumn air, and people gathered to make something with their hands. Our Tweetle Dee Fall Workshop was all of that and more.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our home in Woodland Hills. The weather kept us guessing, but you came ready to settle in, choose your colors, and bring your barn quilts to life. I loved watching each design take shape. Even when two people began with the same pattern, their finished pieces told different stories.

My favorite part of a workshop is always the moment everyone steps back and sees what they’ve made. Then we gather the quilts together for a photo, and the whole day seems to come into view: the colors, the conversations, the laughter, and the women who made it special.

I’m grateful you spent your Saturday creating with us. I hope your barn quilt brings a little of that joy home with you.

If you’d like to join us for the next workshop, I’ll be teaching at Farm & Hive in Inkom, Idaho, on October 10. I would love to see you there for another day of painting and creating together.

With gratitude,

Introducing the Sweet Corn Star Barn Quilt

There is something especially beautiful about the colors of late summer, the deep green of the fields, the warm gold of ripening corn, and the creamy softness of dried husks turning in the sun. Those colors became the inspiration for our newest barn quilt design, the Sweet Corn Star.

When I first painted this pattern, I knew I wanted to use two of our warm Prairie Paint colors:
Acorn Squash and Honeycomb. As the design came together, the golden shapes in the center began to look like sweet corn kernels nestled inside leafy green husks. What started as a traditional geometric star suddenly felt like a little celebration of the harvest.

And just like that, the Sweet Corn Star had its name.

A Star Inspired by the Field

Barn quilts have always carried the stories of home, family, farms, and the land. The Sweet Corn Star feels rooted in that tradition while offering a fresh interpretation of a classic quilt-star design.

Its golden center is surrounded by rich, earthy green and creamy white, creating the feeling of corn wrapped in its husk. The repeating geometry gives the design beautiful movement, while the warm harvest palette makes it feel timeless and welcoming.

It is a pattern that can live comfortably through the seasons. It is especially lovely for late summer and autumn, but its simple farmhouse colors make it beautiful all year long.

Hang it on a porch, in an entryway, above a garden bench, inside a kitchen, or on a favorite outbuilding. Wherever it is placed, the Sweet Corn Star brings a little of the countryside with it.

Painted in Prairie Paint Colors

The original Sweet Corn Star was hand-painted using Prairie Paint colors, including the golden warmth of Acorn Squash and Honeycomb.

These colors remind me of garden harvests, bowls of squash on the table, cornfields glowing in the evening light, and those first hints that summer is beginning to turn toward fall.

Of course, one of the joys of creating your own barn quilt is choosing a palette that tells your story. Follow the original harvest colors or give the design an entirely different personality using colors from your own home, garden, or family traditions.

Make Your Own Sweet Corn Star

The Sweet Corn Star is available in several ways, whether you would like to paint one yourself or enjoy a completed barn quilt.

The Sweet Corn Star Barn Quilt Pattern is available as an instant PDF download or as a full-color printed paper pattern. It includes the design layout, painting guide, and suggested Prairie Paint colors to help you create your own version.

For those who would like a more complete creative experience, the Sweet Corn Star Classic Barn Quilt Kit makes it easy to gather around the table, slow down, and enjoy the process of bringing the design to life.

The finished Sweet Corn Star Barn Quilt is also available for anyone who would love to add this warm, harvest-inspired piece to their home without painting it themselves.

A Little Piece of Harvest

The Sweet Corn Star reminds me that inspiration is often waiting in the most familiar places—in the garden, along a country road, or in the colors of a field we have passed a hundred times before.

This design celebrates those simple, beautiful things: golden corn, green husks, handmade traditions, and the feeling of bringing the harvest home.

I hope you love the Sweet Corn Star as much as I loved creating it.

Celebrate. Dream. Create.

Stories in every stitch and brushstroke.

Meet Plum Pickin & Blue Belle: Two New Prairie Paint Colors

There is something especially lovely about adding new colors to the Prairie Paint collection. Each one begins with a feeling, a memory, or a glimpse of color found in the gardens, fields, and stories that inspire everything we create. Today, I’m so excited to introduce two beautiful new shades:

Plum Pickin
and Blue Belle.

Plum Pickin is a rich, deep periwinkle purple with the warmth and character of a perfectly ripened summer plum. Its name was inspired by memories of my grandmother’s orchard, where plum trees grew alongside the apples. She gathered those beautiful fruits and turned them into homemade jams, sauces, and even plum wine.

It is earthy, nostalgic, and just a little unexpected, the kind of color that feels both old-fashioned and wonderfully fresh. Plum Pickin adds beautiful depth to floral designs, barn quilts, painted furniture, signs, and all the little creative projects that need a touch of something special.

Prairie Paint Plum Pickin

Blue Belle is a beautiful, timeworn blue inspired by the delicate blue flowers that bring such sweetness to a garden. It has a peaceful, welcoming quality that feels right at home in cottage, farmhouse, and prairie-inspired projects.

This lovely shade is soft enough to feel gentle, yet rich enough to make a statement. Pair it with creamy whites and greens for a quiet garden palette, or combine it with deeper colors for a bold and colorful barn quilt design.

Prairie Paint Blue Belle

Beautiful Apart and Even Better Together

Although Plum Pickin and Blue Belle each have their own personality, they are especially beautiful when used together. The rich purple of Plum Pickin gives Blue Belle depth, while Blue Belle brings a soft, peaceful balance to the pairing.

Try them with warm golds, botanical greens, faded pinks, and vintage creams to create a palette that feels as though it was gathered straight from an old farmhouse garden.

Both colors are making their debut in our new Blue Belle Blossom Barn Quilt, where their rich, garden-inspired tones come together in a design filled with color, warmth, and prairie charm.

I cannot wait to see what you create with Plum Pickin and Blue Belle. Whether you use them in a barn quilt, a floral painting, a well-loved piece of furniture, or a project all your own, I hope they inspire you to celebrate, dream, and create.

Plum Pickin and Blue Belle Prairie Paints are available now in the shop.

Introducing the Prairie Compass

Some designs begin with a pattern. Others begin with a feeling.

The Prairie Compass was born from those quiet moments spent outdoors, walking through tall grasses, watching summer clouds drift over the mountains, and noticing how every season has its own palette. It isn't simply a star. It's a reminder that nature has always been our compass.

The warm ochres echo sunlit wheat fields ready for harvest. Mossy greens recall forest trails and hidden meadows. Weathered blues reflect mountain skies after a summer rain, while soft sage and earthy clay ground the design in the colors of the prairie itself.

These are the colors that have always called us home.

For generations, barn quilts have been symbols of craftsmanship, community, and welcome. Hanging proudly on barns, porches, and homesteads, they tell stories without saying a word. The Prairie Compass carries that same tradition while offering a fresh interpretation - one that feels equally at home on a farmhouse porch, a garden fence, or the walls of a cozy cottage.

What I love most about this design is its symbolism. A compass doesn't choose the journey for us. It simply reminds us where we are and helps us find our way when we need direction. In many ways, life is the same. We all have seasons of wandering, seasons of planting, and seasons of coming home to ourselves.

The Prairie Compass is a gentle reminder to stay rooted in what matters most while remaining open to wherever the next path may lead.

Every Prairie Compass is carefully hand painted using our signature Prairie Paint colors, allowing each brushstroke and every piece of wood to retain its own unique character. No two are exactly alike, and that's part of their story.

I hope when you hang one in your home or garden, it becomes more than décor. I hope it becomes a quiet reminder to slow down, look toward the horizon, and remember that home isn't always a place...sometimes it's simply the feeling of being exactly where you're meant to be.

Thank you for being part of this journey and for celebrating handmade craftsmanship with us.  The Prairie Compass will be arriving in the shop in the shop this week, and I can't wait to share it with you.

With gratitude,

Wings Over the Meadow

There is a quiet rhythm to the meadow this time of year.  Grasses bend in the wind, not resisting…just moving with what comes.  The light stretches longer across the field, and everything feels softened at the edges.

I’ve been thinking about movement lately, not the hurried kind,
but the kind that feels guided. The kind that doesn’t pull you away from yourself, but gently returns you there. This week, I finished a new design called Wings Over the Meadow.

It came together slowly… layer by layer, like feathers forming shape.  A star at its center, with points that reach outward in quiet motion. When I stepped back from it, it didn’t feel like a pattern.  It felt like a moment. Like watching birds pass overhead without needing to follow...just witnessing their path and trusting your own.

This design is now available in the shop  as a painted piece and soon a pattern and kit, created with the colors of the meadow and the quiet of open sky. If you find yourself needing a moment of stillness this week,  step outside if you can.

Look up.  Let something pass overhead.  And remember, you don’t have to chase it
to know you’re on your way.

With Love from the Studio,

Goldenrod Meadow - A Barn Quilt Pattern Release

There is a certain kind of gold that only arrives at the end of summer.

It grows along the edges of fields, lining quiet country roads and open meadows,
a wild brightness that returns year after year, no matter the season that came before it.

This is the spirit behind Goldenrod Meadow.

A Field Remembered

This design began, as many do, with memory.

Goldenrod has always felt like a marker of time...
a gentle signal that summer is softening into something deeper.
That harvest is near.
That the work of growing is giving way to the work of gathering.

For me, it brings me back to New York…
to the cottage, where goldenrod grows wild and abundant all around us,
spilling into the fields, catching the light, and turning everything to gold in late summer.

The yellow in this design was inspired directly by those fields
by the goldenrod that surrounds our cottage…
a color pulled not from imagination, but from place.
There is something sacred in that, to paint with a color that already belongs to the land.

The Design

Goldenrod Meadow is built from movement.

Small triangular pieces come together like scattered blooms...shifting, turning, gathering into something whole. Set against a deep grounding background, the golden shapes feel alive, like sunlight caught in motion.

Around the edges, a soft border of color echoes the wildness of a meadow—
unexpected, varied, and beautifully imperfect.

This design is both structured and free…
a balance between tradition and the untamed.

Now Available

The Goldenrod Meadow design is now available in the shop as:

  • Barn Quilt Pattern
  • Barn Quilt Kit (includes your board, pattern, and Prairie Paints)
  • Finished Painted Barn Quilt
  • Goldenrod Prairie Paint – the color at the heart of it all

Each option is created to meet you where you are,
whether you want to paint from scratch, follow a guided kit, or bring home a finished piece.

Prairie Paint: Wild Goldenrod

Wild Goldenrod is more than a color.

It is warmth.
It is resilience.
It is the quiet glow of something that thrives in its own place.

This shade was created to reflect that exact feeling...
inspired by the goldenrod surrounding our New York cottage,
a true meadow gold with depth and richness, designed to carry beautifully across wood, fabric, and time.

Sealed with our Prairie Paint Finishing Wax, each piece is made to last,
indoors or out...aging gently, just like the fields that inspired it.

A Creative Invitation

Goldenrod Meadow is an invitation to slow down.

To paint in rhythm.
To notice color.
To create something with your hands that holds meaning beyond the making.

Whether you’re painting at your kitchen table,
in the studio,
or out under an open sky…

this piece is meant to bring you back to the quiet beauty of the season.

Cathedral Window Barn Quilt – A Tribute to Faith, Family & Stained Glass Memory

The Cathedral Window Barn Quilt is one of the most meaningful designs in the Moonbeams & Cabin Dreams Collection, a series inspired by the stories of my ancestors who homesteaded the Nebraska prairie in the early 1900s.

This barn quilt is a tribute to faith, family, and the places that hold our memories.

The color palette was inspired by a stained glass window dedicated to my grandmother Mildred and grandfather Alvaro in the Howard Community Church in New York. The rich reds, greens, golds, and soft tones reflect the way light filters through glass—carrying both beauty and reverence.

My family’s journey took them from New York to Belle Prairie, Nebraska, where they homesteaded the land, and then back again after the Great Depression. That story of leaving and returning is woven into this design.

Painting this large 55” Cathedral Window Barn Quilt was a deeply personal experience. Each color felt intentional. Each line felt connected. It became more than a design—it became a way to honor those who came before me.

This piece is available as:

  • A finished barn quilt
  • A DIY kit
  • A downloadable pattern

Bring the feeling of stained glass, heritage, and handcrafted beauty into your home or outdoor space with this heirloom-inspired design.

This week we celebrate spring in Our Shop with 20% off all orders with code Spring20.

Green Tomato: A New Prairie Paint Color and Garden-Inspired Barn Quilt

There is a quiet moment in the garden before harvest arrives.

The tomatoes are still green on the vine. The leaves are thick and vibrant. Each morning you walk out with hope, wondering if today might be the day the first blush of red appears.

That in-between moment when everything is still growing and becoming, inspired our newest Prairie Paint color: Green Tomato. This rich garden green captures the deep, lively color of tomato leaves and fruit before they ripen. It’s a color that feels fresh, hopeful, and full of possibility.

The Inspiration Behind the Color

Gardeners know that green tomatoes hold a certain magic.

They are the promise of what’s coming next. The stage where the plant is strong and full of life, quietly preparing for the abundance of late summer.

When I began mixing this color, I kept thinking about those mornings walking through the garden rows, brushing past the vines, checking the fruit, feeling the warmth of the sun on the leaves.

Green Tomato became a color that celebrates that moment of growth and anticipation and is now available in our shop for all of your spaces and creative projects.

The Green Tomato Star Barn Quilt

To introduce the color, I painted a new barn quilt design called the

Green Tomato Star.

This folk-art style star brings together the cheerful colors of a summer garden: Green Tomato -  fresh and vibrant like leaves on the vine, bright tomato red accents and a soft farmhouse white background

Framed in Green Tomato Prairie Paint, the design feels lively and joyful, like a kitchen garden at the height of the season. Barn quilts have always told stories about the land and the people who care for it. This one celebrates the garden and the simple joy of watching things grow.

A Celebration of the Growing Season

Before the baskets fill with tomatoes and the canning jars line the shelves, there is a moment when the garden is simply green and full of promise. That’s the feeling I hoped to capture with Green Tomato Prairie Paint and the Green Tomato Star Barn Quilt.

A color for gardeners.
A design for those who love watching things grow, a
nd a small celebration of the season before harvest.

All orders this week are 20% off with code Spring20.

Blue Belle Painted in Windmill Sky & Bluebird Morning

Yesterday I shared a little reel of me painting Blue Belles with soft petals unfolding in shades of Windmill Sky and Bluebird Morning from the Prairie Paint collection.

There is something about blue flowers.

They don’t shout.
They don’t demand.
They simply bloom.

Blue Belle came to life slowly petal by petal like the first quiet stretch of morning when the house is still and the light begins to shift. I’ve been craving that kind of calm lately. The kind that steadies your breath and reminds you that beauty doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful.

The Colors

Windmill Sky carries that soft, open-air feeling, like standing in a field where the horizon stretches wide and nothing feels confined.

Bluebird Morning is brighter. Hopeful. A color that feels like possibility perched on a fence post.

Together, they feel like spring trying to whisper its way in.

When I began brushing them onto the panel, I wasn’t thinking about perfection. I was thinking about rhythm. About allowing my hand to move the way it moves when I’m stitching or writing. Brushstrokes and stitches aren’t so different. Both are small acts repeated with care.

Why Blue?

Blue has always symbolized:

  • Peace

  • Clarity

  • Devotion

  • Trust

  • Open skies and deep water

In folk art traditions, blue often represents protection and spiritual depth. In nature, blue flowers are rare and because they’re rare, they feel sacred.

Blue Belle feels like that to me. A sacred little bloom.

From Barn Quilts to Florals

Many of you know me through barn quilts and stars, geometry, symmetry, story held in structure. But florals are where my breath softens.

Painting Blue Belle felt like stepping into the softer side of Prairie Paints. The colors are the same. The intention is the same. But the expression is freer.

And I think that’s something I’m leaning into this year ...
structure and softness,
roots and bloom,
brushstroke and stitch.

A Quiet Invitation

If you watched the reel on TikTok or Instagram, thank you for being there while she came to life.

If you haven’t yet, go take a peek  - you’ll see the layers build and the petals open.

And maybe today, you’ll find your own version of Blue Belle:

  • a quiet hour at the table

  • a new color mixed on your palette

  • a stitch begun

  • a seed planted

Beauty doesn’t need to be loud.
It just needs to be tended.

And speaking of practice,  the Creative Caravan is getting closer to the road. I’m planning a series of Open Paint Days very soon. No formal class. No pressure. Just tables, Prairie Paint, florals, stars, and time. A place to gather and create at your own pace. If Blue Belle stirred something in you, these open studio days might be your invitation.

More details coming soon.

With love from the studio,

The Dutch Girl Star: A Folk Tradition Painted Forward

There is something deeply comforting about a star.

Across cultures and generations, stars have marked homes, guided travelers, and quietly reminded us where the center is. The Dutch Girl Star was born from that feeling, a desire to paint something joyful and steady, rooted in folk tradition yet bright enough to feel alive in the present moment.

This design takes its name and spirit from old-world European folk art.  The painted cupboards, hex signs, quilts, and hand worked details that filled farmhouses with color and meaning. These were not decorations made for trends. They were painted to bless a home, to bring beauty into daily life, and to quietly say: you are safe here.

At the heart of the Dutch Girl Star is symmetry, strong geometry softened by color. Each point of the star leads the eye inward, creating a feeling of movement and calm at the same time. This balance is intentional. In folk traditions, stars often symbolized protection, guidance, and harmony within the household.

The color palette carries its own quiet story. Soft aqua and cream bring light and freshness, while deep black grounds the design and gives it weight. Leafy greens nod to growth and renewal, and the warm red accents add just enough boldness - a reminder that joy belongs alongside steadiness.

Together, these vibrant Prairie Paint colors create a star that feels playful but anchored, lively yet timeless.

Painted by Hand, One Layer at a Time

Each Dutch Girl Star barn quilt is hand-painted on wood, layer by layer, allowing the texture of the surface and the brushstrokes to remain visible. This is important to me. Folk art was never meant to be perfect, it was meant to be felt. The slight variations, the way the paint settles into the grain, the quiet evidence of the maker’s hand, these are what give the piece its soul.

Framed in natural cedar, the design is finished in a way that honors both the artwork and the material itself. Whether hung indoors or outside, the Dutch Girl Star is made to weather time gracefully.

It can hang above a hearth, welcome guests from a porch wall, or bring color to a garden or studio space. It fits just as easily in a modern farmhouse as it does in a cottage or cabin...a reminder that tradition doesn’t have to feel old, and handmade beauty always has a place.

The Dutch Girl Star is, at its heart, a celebration of home, of color, of inherited creativity, and of the quiet joy found in making something with care.

May it shine over your space as a symbol of welcome, warmth, and the simple beauty of things made by hand.

With love from the studio,

Morning Star: A New Beginning in Blue

There’s something special about the quiet hours of the morning—when the house is still, the light is soft, and the day feels full of possibility before it even begins. The Morning Star Barn Quilt was born from that moment.

Morning Star Barn Quilt

This design is a celebration of new beginnings and steady hope. The Morning Star has long been a symbol of guidance and renewal, and I loved the idea of creating a piece that feels like an invitation to begin again—calmly, gently, and with intention.

For this barn quilt, I painted using our two newest Prairie Paint colors: Bluebird Morning and Windmill Sky. Both were inspired by early skies here in the studio—those pale, peaceful blues that arrive just before the day fully wakes up. Together, they create a palette that feels light and open, yet grounding. The kind of colors that make a room breathe.

Bluebird Morning & Windmill Sky

Each Morning Star is hand-painted on wood, allowing the grain and subtle texture to show through. The layers of color, weathered white, and geometric pattern give the piece depth while keeping it soft and welcoming. Finished with a rustic wood frame and sealed for durability, it’s made to be lived with—whether hung indoors above a sofa or bed, or displayed outdoors on a porch or barn wall.

I especially love how the Morning Star feels in a light-filled space. It brings structure without heaviness, color without noise. It’s the kind of piece that quietly holds the room together.

This design feels like a blessing for the week ahead—one of clarity, calm, and forward movement. A reminder that each day begins again, and that beauty can be both simple and meaningful.

The Morning Star Barn Quilt is now available in the shop, and I can’t wait to see where it finds its home.

With love from the studio,

The Ponderosa Star

The Ponderosa Star

A Barn Quilt Rooted in Strength & Stillness

Some designs arrive quietly, carrying more meaning than they first reveal. The Ponderosa Star Barn Quilt is one of those pieces—steadfast, grounding, and deeply rooted.

Inspired by the towering ponderosa pine, this star reflects resilience shaped over time. Ponderosa pines grow slowly and deliberately, sinking deep roots before stretching skyward. They endure wind, weather, fire, and long seasons of waiting—standing as markers of patience, protection, and strength.

The Ponderosa Star carries that same spirit.

Its bold geometry and balanced form offer a sense of steadiness—something to return to when life feels unsettled. Painted in our Prairie Paint Collection, the colors are intentionally chosen to feel earthy, timeless, and anchored to the land. These hues work together the way nature does: quietly, confidently, without excess.

A Star for All Seasons

The Ponderosa Star belongs to every season. In spring, it speaks of new growth grounded in strong beginnings. In summer, it reflects endurance and presence. In autumn, it honors harvest and gratitude. In winter, it stands firm—holding space, even in stillness.

Whether painted as a finished barn quilt, stitched into fabric, or reflected on the page of a Creative Almanac, this star invites a simple question:

Where are you being asked to root more deeply before you rise?

Made with Intention

Each Ponderosa Star Barn Quilt is created with care, from the design itself to the paints, patterns, and process behind it. It’s available as a painted barn quilt, or a pattern, allowing you to bring this symbol of strength into your own hands and home.

✨ Celebrate. Dream. Create. ✨
