New Barn Quilt Kits!

Wilde Bloem Morning Glory Barn Quilt

As the colors change from forest green to amber and crimson, we waited for the last of our Wilde Bloem flowers to bloom.  Late into the season Morning Glory climbed and began to show small buds, each waiting their turn to burst in blue.  Knowing this flower is the last to bloom, and each flower lives for just one day, we found ourselves going out every morning just to see if there was a new bloom.  

The Mo0rning Glory flower represents love, life and mortality.  Lots of symbolism in these beautiful blooms.  The first big blue bloom took my breath away.  All the symbolism made sense to me.  They bloom each morning and spread their petals so wide and always towards the sun, and then by evening, they turn inward and are gone.  Each day, a different one would live for one day.  

I thought so much about this pattern and the remarkable beauty that came and went in one day.  What beauty do I choose to soak in, and share in a day.  The questions in my mind were, what if I had just one day to shine and is one day enough?  I don't think a flower has made my think so much about my worth in a day.  Each morning, I would welcome the new, and go thank them each night.  

In addition to the unique life of the Morning Glory blooms, the leaves are a vibrant green in the shape of hearts.  Maybe that is where the symbol of love comes from.  I love this flower, and can't wait to grow them again next year.

New Wilde Bloem Flowers

Our two new Wilde Bloem flowers are releasing today.  We are excited to add Bloeming Sunflowers and Wilde Clover to our growing collection of floral inspired barn quilts, barn quilt kits and patterns.   Both of these flowers are dear to our hearts because of the symbolism in each of them.  All of the Wilde Bloem flowers were chosen for their meanings and for design elements that make them extra beautiful in paint and cloth quilts.

The Wilde Clover is the symbol of good luck, blessings and fortune and we loved painting this in our freshest Prairie Paint colors.  My favorite is the Alfalfa Bloom, which is the dark and vibrant pink.  Then again, two of my most loved greens are there beside it.  You will love painting with our own blend of gel-chalk paints which have superior coverage and vintage inspired colors you will love.

New Wilde Bloem Flowers

Wildflower Pottery

The day our snow is melted we are out looking through the grasses and rocks on the mountain for the first peeks of those colorful blooms.  This year I wanted to preserve the first of the blooms with these farmhouse pottery slabs.  So, I went for a walk in the field to find a few beautiful flowers.  

They are so easy to make and so beautiful hung in a collection on a wall, or displayed with your favorite blooms.  It is also a great way to preserve special blooms from bridal bouquets and other special occasions.  You can make them tiny for a single petal or bud and wear as a necklace or you can make a big slab and recreate your garden in pottery.  There are no limits to the ways this technique can be used to bring lasting wild flowers into your home.

The materials are few and relatively inexpensive.  You will want Polymer Clay.   I have tried using Air Dry Clay and it is so temperamental and brittle, it is sad to loose your blooms to weak clay, so I clearly recommend using the Polymer Clay.  I love to use Sculpey Polymer Clay .  It comes in lots of colors and is so smooth and easy to work with.  The directions were straight on correct and my projects always turn out perfectly using their clay.  So get some!  Price point is anywhere from $2.50 to $9.00 for a pack which will make 3 to 4 floral pottery pieces.

The Polymer Clay comes out hard like a brick.  You will want to break off a piece and knead it in your hands until it gets soft and workable.  Polymer Clay is made of plastic PVC material and softens as it is worked.  So kneads a piece and roll it out to be a 1/4 inch thick.  I like my edges to look like a slap of clay and not perfectly cut.  You can cut your shapes and edges with a knife, but again I love the natural look of rounded fingered shapes.  Use a toothpick or dowel to make a hole in the top to hang it from and place on a non-stick baking pan.

If you are wanting a relief of a flower, lay it down on the clay where you want it to mold and lightly roll over it with a rolling pin to make the indenture.  Lift the flower off of the clay and bake at 275 degrees for 15 minutes.  

If you want to preserve fresh wildflowers with all their color, pick blooms that are soft and will flatten well.  Lay your blooms onto the clay in the place you want them to be and roll over to flatten them into the clay.   Use tweezers to position any petals that are out of place and tap lightly into the clay.  Pick off any that are standing upright and will not lay down.  Heat your oven to 275 degrees and bake for 20 minuets.

The baking process will dry out the flowers and the colors will dull just a bit, but the sealer will refresh them in the next process.  Let the clay cool.

Use your finger to lightly brush off any loose petal crumbs or leaves that popped up during the baking/drying process.

To seal your wildflowers, lightly brush over the baked flowers and clay background with the Sculpey Satin Glaze.  This liquid is the same component as the Polymer Clay but without the fillers, so just as the Polymer Clay dried hard, this satin glaze dries clear and hard over your clay piece to seal in the petals and other parts that may not have laid perfectly flat.  

After you have lightly brushed this over your clay piece, return it to the over for 5 to 10 minutes to bake it clear.  Watch closely as you can over bake it and turn your piece brown...(I know).    Bring it out of the oven and let cool.  

Use the tip of a needle or other tiny sharp object to clear the hole back out and your DIY Wild Flower Pottery piece is ready to hang! 

If you are looking for suppliers of the Sculpey products, I found mine at my local Hobby Lobby.  I hope you enjoy this DIY project!  It is one of my favorite of all time.  I know I say that often, but for real, this was so easy and relatively quick to make.

Wildflower Pottery

Flora Angels

Angels Among Us was one of our very first collaborations when I married my husband and learned that he knew how to use tools.  I had been designing and stitching angels for the years that I was a single mom, stitching in the evenings after work at the mortgage company.  In fact, my very fist embroidery pattern that sold was a garden angel with the saying Whatsoever Ye Sow, So Shall Ye Reap.  I think I needed all the angels I could keep around me.  

After our angels were published in several national publications and shared on a few home networks, we set them aside for other projects.  These sweet angels keep making their way back to our worktables and now we have added our Flora Angel to the collection of angels in our online shop.

Our Flora Angel is a sweet minimalist angel made from wood and wire.  Her cedar wood basket is stained and filled with bright wool flowers to welcome the garden's most beautiful guests.  

This year, we have also added the option to purchase kits to make your own Flora Angel.  The kits include the wood cut out pieces, wire for the halo and basket handle, and wool to make your own flowers for her basket.  We are so excited to offer these kits so that you can create a little joy for yourself in making your own angel.  It's like sharing the creative happiness with you!

Indian Paint Brush Wilde Bloem Embroidery

Of all the flowers that grow in the wild, the Indian Paintbrush makes my heart jump every time I'm blessed to find one.  This wild flower grows in the west among  dry, rocky soil and is found in the wild fields in the east, both places I have called home in my life.  It symbolizes the Wayfinder or following your own path, which is my "word" and has a deep connection to my soul.

This month we painted the Indian Paintbrush Barn Quilt as part of the Wild Bloem Collection, our 2023 Block of the Month.  I am more in love with this collection of wildflowers everyday as I stitch and paint these 9 wildflowers and of course the Wild Bloem Bee.  

There is something so vintage about simple embroidery done on black and our Wild Bloem embroidery florals are stunning stitched alone or in the Wild Bloem Hoop.  This week we released the WB Indian Paintbrush Embroidery Kit so that you can stitch along with me on Instagram @tweetledeedesignco or our Tweetle Dee YouTube Channel.

Indian Paint Brush Wilde Bloem Embroidery

Castle Creek Furniture

Farmhouse furniture has been trending for a few years now, typically with white on white with minimal wood finishes.  Though the  exterior of the old farmhouse I grew up in was white with black shutters, the interior rooms were full of color.  The rooms all had wood, marble, crystal, and colored glass and furniture in the home had a story to tell.  

I've had this little breakfast table in my kitchen for many years, all white with white chairs, until this past week when I decided to paint it in one of my favorite Prairie Paint  colors, Castle Creek.

The inspiration for this deep green came from the colors I remember in an area of the woods adjacent to the family farm, aka The Woods.  After a hike over the corn field hill, through the woods, and along the slate gorge, you come to a small pond called Castle Creek.  It is surrounded by towering trees and vines, moss and a green field with an aged fishing shack complete with a little covered porch.  

On a recent visit to our local antique shop we found a set of black chairs from the 1870's for $100.  That find was the push I needed to paint my table dark, and I knew the best of our greens was Castle Creek.  So, we took our white chairs to the ReStore and dropped them off to go to another family and picked up our new antique chairs, threw a tarp down and sanded the top and rough spots of our white table. 

Then one coat with a furniture paint roller and a brush for the curvy parts, we let it dry and then added two more for good measure.  Let dry and then added a coat of our Prairie Paint Finishing Wax.

Our Prairie Paints Finishing Wax is made of bees wax and compounds that add  richness to our gel-chalk Prairie Paints and seal the wood and paint for years of beauty and use. 

We let it dry and then a light wipe of a soft cloth and it was ready to place these beautiful black chairs around our deeply moody breakfast table.  Putting them all together it was clear that they had belonged together all along, like two peas in a pod.  

The Prairie Paints we used were Castle Creek, and the finish is the Prairie Paints Finishing Wax.  Both of these are available on Our Shop.  We hope that this post inspires you to add a little color to your farmhouse.  We love ours and know that you will too.

Mini Barn Quilt Paint Kits

Isn't everything a little cuter when it's mini?  I think so!  Especially when it comes to our favorite quilts in full color, and mini.  New to our shop is a collection of Mini Barn Quilt Paint Kits!

Our favorite barn quilts in a pre-scored 4" wood barn quilt, with all the Prairie Paints and Finishing Wax, brush and instructions too.  We have had so much fun sharing these with customers all over the country this season, and now they are in our shop, all packaged and ready to ship to you.

When we were in Arizona our sweet granddaughter Lila begged to paint one, and with paint pots open and a brush in hand she painted the Blue Belle all by herself.  

She was so proud of herself.  I helped with the stain and the twine, but it was the first ornament on her tree and she did it all by herself!  It was so fun creating that memory with her.
