Macrame Wall Hangings - Fresh Living

I grew up in the 70's when macrame was "all the rage".  The women in my family loved making plant holders, belts, vests, and of course wall hangings.  Today this retro-craft is making a comeback in home decor in a simpler version than what we saw in the 70's.  

To make a wall hanging all you need is a stick, or strip of wood and some rope.  That's it!  It's an art form that is simply created by tying knots.  And, if you make a mistake it's so simple or untie and begin again.  I love it!   Pinterest is filled with examples and tutorials for macrame projects.  I thought I would share a few of my favorites.....


This first one is from Roxy Taghavian of Brit + Co.  I love this one because of the color and instead of  rope she uses strips of cotton knit fabric.  The tutorial is on her site and it took me less than an hour to make it.  Simple knots repeated is all it took!


My other favorite is the mini-wall hanging from Parlor.  I love her tutorial and the way this Hitch Knot looks so complicated....but it's not!  (No pun intended!)  She also shows how to die the ends of the rope to get a ombre look to the hanging.  So cute!


Red Heart gives one of the best picture tutorials with 6 basic knots you can use to create your own macrame designs.  It has inspired me to try a few new knots myself.

Honey Vanilla Orange Bundt Cake

A couple of weeks ago we had a party with the women in our neighborhood and the centerpieces for the tables were cakes.  It was a fun night with lots of good food and laughter.  I was kind of stranded that morning with my car in the shop and had to "shop" my pantry for ingredients to make a cake for the party.


I found the ingredients to make a cake and a few surprises on the shelves too.  I loved experimenting to create a new recipe...and this one was so yummy!  It's moist, which is a big deal for me because who wants a dry crumbly cake? 

 It had a hint of honey and orange, and the fragrance made my kitchen smell like my favorite Tea & Honey candle.  Oh my gosh I was in heaven.  It only took about an hour to make and because it isn't too sweet, it would be a perfect cake for a brunch too.  Again the secret to this cake is the pudding in the mix and the Honey Orange Glaze that is brushed over the cake.  This extra hint of flavor sends it over the edge.

To make this cake you will need....

Honey Vanilla Orange Bundt Cake

One Yellow Cake Mix
One Small Package of Vanilla Pudding
3 Eggs
1/3 Cup of Vegetable Oil
1 Cup of Water
1 Teaspoon of Real Vanilla Extract
1/2 Cup Sour Cream
1 Orange
3 Tablespoons Honey

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  In a mixer add the cake mix and pudding packet.  
Add eggs, oil, water, vanilla, and sour cream.  Mix together.
Zest the rind of the orange and add to the batter.  Squeeze the juice of the orange into the batter and mix together.  Add honey.

Pour batter into a greased and floured bundt pan and bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.  Let cool for 5 to 10 minutes.  Tip over and tap the bottom to release the cake.   Let cool while you make the glaze.

Honey Orange Glaze

1 Cup of Sugar
3/4 Cup of Water
3 Tablespoons of Honey
Juice of one Orange

Add ingredients and bring to a boil for 3 minutes. 
 Brush onto cake with a pastry brush.  Let soak in while you make the frosting.


Cream Cheese Orange Frosting

4 oz. of Softened Cream Cheese
3 Cups of Powdered Sugar
Juice and Zest of One Orange
1 Teaspoon of Vanilla
3-4 Tablespoons of Milk

Add all ingredients in a mixer and whip on high. 
 Add milk a little at a time until you get a smooth consistency.  
With a large spoon drizzle the frosting over the cake in a back and forth motion to cover the cake.  Sprinkle with a little orange zest.
